Yobdar Crafts: Embodying Elegance and Culture
Ethiopia possesses Ethnic and various kinds of unique handicrafts because of its unique history, tradition and culture evolved by the various people of the country. Traditional Hand weaving skill in Ethiopia has a history of probably Thousands of years. It is believed that there are 200,000+ hand loom weavers in the country. The problem is, the weaving skill is unutilized, undervalued and the weavers are marginalized.
Even though the Ethiopian hand loom woven textiles are beautiful and unique, they don’t mostly have the contemporary feature as the worldwide modern market demands. Adjusting the design and the texture by applying different techniques, we solved the problem of its marketability for the modern market.

Textile Production
A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Style
- Spinning: Cotton is deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture. Traditional cotton hand spinning skill using dropping spindle is a well-preserved skill for centuries that passed down from mothers to daughters and is still an extra source of income for women in rural areas. Handspun cotton is textured and soft and ensures each individual product unique. In our workshop, we spin cotton using spinning wheel and we also purchase hand spun cotton thread from women whom spin using dropping spindle from their premise
- Weaving: The talent and the skill of Ethiopian traditional weavers is beyond words. We have the most talented weavers inhouse and also weavers who work from their premises. We make sure they get their fair share from each product they make.
- Dyeing: We pot dye each and individual products using Azo free and OEKO-TEX certified dyes. We are also studying how to use gases and white biotechnology to reduce the consumption of excess water during the dyeing process.
